antimicrobial overview

Antimicrobials are organic or inorganic compounds that suppress the growth of odor and stain-causing bacteria, molds, mildews, and fungi. Regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency in the United States and Canada, and several other agencies around the world, antimicrobials can be used in or on a wide variety of materials, including, but not limited to, coatings, plastics, sealants, and textiles.

While antimicrobials are all used to achieve the same goal, their modes of operation differ. Not all antimicrobials provide the same properties. Differences in the types of antimicrobials that can be used to treat a coating for metals include:

  • Modes of operation in inhibiting the growth of odor and stain-causing bacteria, molds, mildews, and fungi
    • Varying modes of operation can depend on how the antimicrobial is stored within the coating and if/ how it may be released
  • Release rate
    • Certain antimicrobials release themselves to the surface of the coating to interact with odor and stain-causing microorganisms; the rate at which these antimicrobials release themselves can affect the useful life of the coating
    • Unlike most other coatings with antimicrobial protection, Sureshield coatings offer long-lasting protection that should last beyond the useful life of the products they cover
  • Costs
    • Antimicrobials vary in cost, depending on the type used
